The Tax Rebate Scam
This has been going round for years but sadly people are still falling for it! The victim receives an email in their inbox which looks official and has the same branding as normal HMRC documentation and invites them to apply online for a tax rebate that has already been calculated in their favour - the amounts vary between email to email. By clicking on a link in the email they are then redirected to a website that impersonates HMRC and asks them to type in their personal details such as National Insurance number, address, employer, passport number and most importantly their credit or debit card number, expiry date and CSV number! The victim is told that HMRC need this info to allow them to process the tax refund into the credit or debit card. This is obviously completely bogus as HMRC nor indeed any tax authority would send out emails inviting customers to apply for tax refunds nor would they arrange for any refund to be paid directly into their credit card account!
If you receive one of these phishing emails, please forward it to HMRC's fraud team here . If you visit the real HMRC website you can view several of the variants of this email scam.
If you are a victim to this email, please immediately contact your card issuer and explain what's happened. They will cancel your card immediately, order a replacement with a new number and pass the details onto their fraud section.
